New Year’s Eve Fireworks 2025 Cause a 10x Spike in Greater Jakarta’s Air Pollution!
The streak of clean, refreshing air in Greater Jakarta came to an abrupt halt on New Year’s Eve as fireworks lit up the sky and polluted the atmosphere 😔.
Here’s what happened:
At first glance, the air quality might not seem too alarming—but believe it or not, the pollution levels skyrocketed to 10 TIMES the usual levels! What’s behind this massive spike? 🤔
Let’s break it down:
In the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, Jabodetabek was basking in some of its cleanest air in a while! PM2.5 levels—the tiny pollutants harmful to our lungs—didn’t even exceed 20 μg/m³, with a record-breaking low of 5.37 μg/m³. That’s unbelievably clean air for a city as busy as Greater Jakarta! 😍
But as soon as the festivities kicked off, things took a dramatic turn. Starting from 7 PM, PM2.5 levels began climbing rapidly, and by 1 AM, they peaked at an alarming level 🤮. Fireworks, bonfires, and other celebratory activities pumped harmful particles into the air, blanketing the city with pollution.
The good news? By 5 AM, nature had done its thing, and the air started clearing up again, returning to safer levels 🥹🫶.
This year’s New Year’s celebration serves as a reminder of the impact our festivities have on air quality. While the fireworks may be dazzling, the hidden cost to our health and environment is something we can’t ignore.
Maybe next year, we can start a new tradition—one that’s kinder to the planet and our lungs. What do you think? 🌍✨
