Coldplay’s Music of The Spheres World Tour (MOTSWT) is definitely more than just a concert tour. Their journey is a groundbreaking breakthrough in the music industry. Pioneering a genuine sustainable movement beyond song lyrics, setting a notable example for fellow musicians. Join us as we delve into Coldplay's profound contributions to society, exploring the lasting impact of their commitment to a more sustainable and responsible music industry.

Coldplay’s Commitment To Preserve Nature 🍃

Since the conclusion of the A Head Full of Dreams Tour in 2016-2017, Coldplay has shown a heightened commitment to environmental sustainability. This dedication is evident in their latest album, "Everyday Life," where the band opted to postpone the accompanying tour to ensure its carbon neutrality. Demonstrating a profound concern for the ecosystem, Coldplay has forged partnerships with key stakeholders in both the green academia and industry. Through these collaborations, the band is actively contributing to the protection of the environment, showcasing a commendable fusion of music and environmental responsibility.

Coldplay engaged with Prof. John E. Fernandez of the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative to track the carbon footprints of the MOTSWT and joined a partnership with DHL for equipment delivery with a less-carbon option. The music group also used the profits from ticket sales for funding environmental initiatives such as ClientEarth, The Ocean Cleanup, Climeworks, Sea Shepherd, Project Seagrass, Sustainable Food Trust, Cleaner Seas Group, Food Forest Project, Knowledge Pele, Conservation Collective and others.

In Indonesia, Coldplay has contributed to planting 100,000 trees in the Kalimantan Water Catchment Restoration and donated an interceptor (a river cleaner boat) for Cisadane River in West Java. The boat was called Neon Moon II.

Sustainability Initiatives During The Concert 🎼

The heartbeat of the concert isn't just the music; it's the energy pulsating from the crowd, quite literally driving the show forward! Within the concert arena, innovative kinetic floors and stationary bikes tap into the dance movements and pedal power of the fans, transforming their enthusiasm into electricity that powers the entire event.

Recognizing the importance of staying hydrated while jamming out, Coldplay takes a sustainable approach by providing water refill stations throughout the arena. To enhance fan safety, glass and metal bottles are prohibited, ensuring an extra layer of protection for concertgoers.

Emphasizing eco-conscious transportation, Coldplay urges fans to either walk to the venue or utilize public transport. In a strategic partnership with MRT Jakarta, the concert experience is seamlessly integrated with enhanced train services during event times, mirroring the successful collaboration with the SMTOWN concert in Jakarta.

Going beyond the ordinary, the concert promoter opts for LED plant-based material instead of conventional wristbands. These wristbands not only add a vibrant glow to the audience but are also recyclable. In a move towards circular sustainability, fans are encouraged to return the wristbands to the arena, ensuring that even the smallest details contribute to the overall eco-friendly concert experience.

The Air Quality Around Coldplay's Concert 💨

An air quality average of 40 µg/m³ during a Coldplay concert, falling into the "moderate to unsafe for vulnerable groups" range, may raise concerns for concert attendees, especially those who are part of vulnerable groups such as individuals with respiratory issues, children, or the elderly.

For event organizers, it would be prudent to consider implementing measures to address the air quality concerns, such as:

  1. Communication: Provide clear communication to attendees about the air quality levels and potential risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
  2. Venue Considerations: Explore options to improve air circulation within the concert venue or consider alternative indoor venues if feasible.
  3. Protective Measures: Encourage attendees, especially vulnerable individuals, to take necessary precautions, such as wearing masks or bringing personal air purifiers.
  4. Health Stations: Set up health stations with medical personnel who can provide assistance or guidance in case of respiratory issues.
  5. Weather Monitoring: Keep a close eye on weather conditions that may affect air quality, and be prepared to adapt plans accordingly.

Ultimately, prioritizing the well-being of concertgoers and taking proactive steps to address air quality concerns will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable concert experience.

Concert’s Impact on The World and Fans 👸

The Music Of The Spheres Tour stands out as a trailblazer in environmental sustainability, showcasing a remarkable 47% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to the previous stadium tour in 2016-17. As we embark on the second year of the tour, a significant leap has been made by running the entire show—audio, lights, lasers, and more—on an electric battery system. This strategic move ensures that we operate on 100% renewable energy, maximizing efficiency in Coldplay’s commitment to reducing carbon footprint.

The band’s dedication extends beyond the stage, with the incorporation of electric vehicles and alternative fuels whenever possible. Concurrently, a conscious effort is made to minimize waste and plastic usage, aligning everyday practices with a sustainable ethos.

The Music Of The Spheres Tour not only sets a remarkable precedent within the music industry but also serves as a compelling example for concerts worldwide. This achievement is not just about reducing community environmental impact; it's a call to action, encouraging other artists to embrace eco-friendly practices in their own tours. By doing so, we aim to inspire fans to take meaningful and sustainable initiatives in their own lives, fostering a collective awareness that transcends the boundaries of the concert arena.
